Recent Race Highlights

It's time for a thrilling update on my running life which has been dominated by several super fun races:

Road Runner Sports Adventure Run
Our local Road Runner Sports store started hosting Adventure Runs this Spring.  You can pre-register or just show up for these fun runs which occur the first Thursday of every month.  Basically, you show up between 5:30 & 6 to register, test out new running products from sponsors, and secure a good spot for the race map unveiling.  Then, at 6:30 on the dot, the store unveils a map of the city that shows various checkpoints (usually 10 or so) that you can visit to get free raffle tickets.  You then have one hour to run (or jog or walk) to as many checkpoints as you can, to get as many tickets as you can.  Some checkpoints just hand out tickets while others make you do push ups, play a game of corn hole, you name it.  You then return to the store by 7:30....
for a complimentary beer (or two if you pre-register)
and to sort out your tickets from the run.  The store then raffles off $1500 worth of running gear including incredible prizes like garmins and massage gift certificates!  The fun doesn't end there.  The store finishes the night with a post-race party at a local bar where you can win even more free stuff!

VABeau and I did our first adventure run several weeks ago and are officially hooked.  We had a blast and vowed to do it as much as we can in the future.  Road Runner Sports hosts Adventure Runs at several of their stores so check out yours to see if they offer this amazing free running event.

Lawyers Have Heart 10K
The last race I ran was the Lawyers Have Heart 10K on June 9th.  I love this race and try to do it every year.  After training for a 1/2 marathon each March, it's really nice to follow that race up with a much more manageable distance and a 10K could not be more perfect.
The LHH is not only a great distance, but it's tons of fun too.  You start and finish at the Georgetown Waterfront and run the whole race on a fairly flat course which felt like heaven to me after the Rock n Roll DC 1/2!
This race will forever be special to me because I PRd by a lot this year.  I ran the 10K in 53:18 which equals out to 8:35 minute miles.  This made my month and I could not have been more proud of myself.  I knew my consistent running and keeping up with my New Years resolution to run at least 15 miles per week would pay off, but I had never expected to do this well.  When I looked back at my last PR, I was even more shocked.  My fastest race to date was 8:57 minute miles!
My personal accomplishments aside, this is a fantastic race and happens to be one of the best organized ones in the area.  I highly recommend you run it if you're in the DC area next year!  Then you can join my friends and I for a fun post race party on the waterfront!

The Color Run
The LHH 10K will be my last race for a few months before the Fall races start up.  One Fall race that I can hardly wait for is The Color Run.  I am officially signed up for the DC Color Run on September 9th and am counting down the months until it's here.  Apparently the run involves running 3 miles while volunteers spray you with colorful paint and powders.
The end result looks like this and I am beyond excited to join in on the fun.
Has anyone done a Color Run yet? Was it as fun as it appears to be?

  1. The raffle ticket races sound so fun! I wish the Mond had similar races!

I'm a newlywed, labor and delivery nurse, food lover, self-proclaimed wine-o, and shopping addict. I was raised in southern VA, went to school in central VA(Go Hoos!), and currently live in northern VA with my adorable husband. I consider myself to be a true Virginian, hence the blog title. I plan to chronicle our adventures as newlyweds in the DC area while sharing some of my favorite things.
